"Young people get their news from late night talk shows." - Sometimes or at least a few years ago I would have no idea what is going on in the world if it wasn't for SNL's weekend update or Letterman's monologue. It is so weird that most people don't read the newspaper or watch the news so the only way they know what is going on in the world is when our comedians make fun of a situation or crack a joke about the latest gossip or presidential blunder.

2. "The first movie, Birth of a Nation, about the KKK and how we need to be scared of black people." - It is no surprise to me that such a racist film was made by early Americans as a propaganda tool to keep the white man at the top of society. All of the classes I took this quarter had this movie mentioned in it. It is sad to think about our nation's history. We were built on lies.

3. "Titanic was the most money-making film of all time?!!" - This movie will never be topped. It had everything you could want. A struggle of a man who has nothing and is of minority (but white skinned) trying to break into a higher class to get the girl he loves. A girl, stuck in a life she wants out of, looking for her diamond in the rough. A tragic true story disaster of American history where many people died and a sad ending. A great piece of film and I know everyone who was alive went to see that movie.

Media Ethics/Media Law

Poynter Online - Top Stories

The New York Post cartoon attempted to create a punchline out of President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package and a homicidal chimp in Connecticut. It is in the top-ten social networking sites but doesn't reach international popularity due to its french-based language site.
I use facebook to connect with friends in high school, but mainly to keep in contact with my family in Italy. I am a little behind the times because I get my videos from the library, but I really enjoyed seeing a realistic future depiction in a movie that didn't over-do it, thoughtful action scenes, dark but brings hope. Also, it was cast perfectly. I also like Into the Wild, The Island, The Wackness, all available for free at your local library. I usually just ready to expand my brain or for school. These are my influential books.

1: "Living, Studying and Working in Italy" - NOT A TRAVEL BOOK, this book put my dream of moving to Italy on hold for a while. I go visit my family there once a year and I really want to live there. They tell me no and my parents do to. Until I finished this book and realized how much work it is and how I should just get my education here first, I had a dream. This book taught me to wait.

Amazon.com: Living, Studying, and Working in Italy: Everything You Need to Know to Live La Dolce Vita (9780805073065): Monica Larner, Travis Neighbor Ward: Books

2: "Haight Ashbury: A History" - I absolutely love learning about things they don't teach you in school. We are so close to the place where social consciousness almost created a place where we could live in peace. Humans coming together to celebrate life, it was a different time back then and this book about the bay area in the 60's changed my life because it showed me what really happened and that people like me used to exist and to keep faith something will change again.

Amazon.com: The Haight-Ashbury: A History (9781932958553): Charles Perry: Books

3: "Savage Kingdom: The True Story of Jamestown" - this is just one of many influential books I have read in the past few years, another "what really happened" book. Nothing gets sugar coated, or edited for schools. I love to read about what they try to cover up and don't want us to know. The settlers stole this country, removed a entire race of people and enslaved another to build their own country in its place. It was influential because it showed me another reason why there will always be resentment and prejudice in this country.

Amazon.com: Savage Kingdom: The True Story of Jamestown, 1607, and the Settlement of America (9780060090579): Benjamin Woolley: Books

Media Impact

I will be conducting a study on the socialization of today’s children from the media, specifically video games. I will take four random children from different age groups. One from 4th grade, one from 6th grade, one from 8th grade and one high school senior. I will observe how many hours they play video games every day, see how it effects their attention and participation in class, their social behavior, negative attitude or violent behavior and their energy levels. I believe video games hinder productivity, motivation and turn kids into violent robots. That is just my theory. Some might try and prove individual differences theory, but I believe cultivation is so strong and kids nowadays spend so much time with video games that my lab experiment will come out positive. By using survey methods I will ask them questions and see how these video games effect them. Try and prove against the cathasis theory and show the world how bad video games are.

Media Autobiography

The television was and is my parent, my teacher, my advisor, my friend and my window to the world without having to step outside. All my life I have consumed media. Reading children's books that shaped my young mind. A children's show that taught me to spell and to laugh. Waiting by the radio for my favorite song to come on the air so I could hit record and listen to it again and again. Sitting by the television and eating while the rest of my family sat at the table. Learning my values from a sitcom family. Learning my ABC's from a blue puppet. My generation was just the beginning. We were the firsts to be able to go on the internet and comunicate with the world. Our minds are filled with so much content, stimulents from such a media overload, I am surprised I call myself normal. I will admit I have been brainwashed from when I was a child. How to speak, act, what to wear, what to want, all programed into my mind for me. It has taken me twenty-five years to break out of my cloud and see this effect media has on people.

I want to change this. I want to get back at the advertisers that targeted me as a youth when the laws against advertising towards children were abolished in 1984. Shows like He-Man and Ninja Turtles molded my little mind into a mush of consuming and branding. I want to teach the world to turn off their television and get out in the world, talk in the streets, be human! The media can be used for good, but it isn't. They could save the world but they would rather pump commercials and products on us and force us to want them by showing scare topics on the news like disease and disasters to depress and motivate us to consume. Pump our brains with ideology and politics, and use propaganda to sway our ideas and votes to what "they want".

I am a F/Tva and comm major and I will do something in my life to get my revenge. For all those years spent layed out on the couch hooked up to my laugh box. But how could one take on the media and it's main weapon the TV? It makes me feel so warm and homey when I have it on. Without that glow, and that sound of my sitcom family I am alone. And it this world of techno robots we call "humans", being alone is a scary thing.
